Leveraging the Rural Connectivity Group (RCG)
Established in 2017, the RCG is a joint effort by One NZ, Spark, and 2Degrees to enhance rural mobile coverage across New Zealand. Utilizing cutting-edge Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology, RCG sites provide improved digital equity in underserved areas, enabling better broadband solutions for rural homes and businesses.
At WombatNET, our strategic partnership with the RCG enables us to leverage their extensive network of over 500 rural sites. Our advanced 4G+ modems perfectly integrate with RCG infrastructure, delivering fast, reliable connectivity precisely where it’s most needed.

Weak indoor signals can limit your internet experience. To ensure optimal connectivity, we provide tailored antenna solutions suited to your home’s specific location and structure.
- Indoor antennas: Simple, cost-effective signal boost for minor reception improvements.
- Outdoor antennas: High-performance solutions installed externally to capture maximum 4G signal, recommended for areas with weaker coverage.
Our team will recommend and professionally install the ideal antenna, ensuring you receive the strongest possible internet connection.

What is WombatWireless™ 4G+?
WombatWireless™ 4G+ is a premium wireless broadband service powered by One NZ’s nationwide 4G mobile network. It delivers fast, reliable internet across most locations in the Wellington region and beyond—anywhere with 4G coverage. In areas with weaker signal strength, an external antenna (from $99) may be required to improve reception and ensure optimal performance.
What’s the difference between 4G and 4G+?
While both technologies use the same mobile tower infrastructure, 4G+ (also known as LTE Advanced) is a faster, more advanced version of standard 4G. It works by combining multiple frequency bands from the same or nearby towers (a process called carrier aggregation or channel bonding) to increase total bandwidth and boost speeds.
This means:
•Faster downloads and uploads
•Better performance during peak times
•More stable connections, especially for streaming and video calls
WombatWireless™ 4G+ routers are specifically configured to take advantage of these capabilities, ensuring you get the fastest and most reliable connection possible from the One NZ network.
What’s the difference between self-install and managed install?
The type of installation depends on your 4G signal strength.
•Self-install: If your property has strong 4G reception, your router can be shipped to you. Simply plug it in and connect. A $20 freight charge applies. Includes a 30-day connection guarantee.
•Managed install: If signal strength is low, our technician will assess your property and recommend an external antenna to boost performance. A site visit is conducted before any work begins, and a no-obligation quote will be provided.
What does managed installation typically involve?
A managed installation includes:
•A site visit to assess 4G signal levels
•Installation of an external directional or omni antenna
•Professional setup and configuration of your router
Because each property is different, antenna models and mountings may vary. Pricing will be based on your unique situation.
How does wireless broadband actually work?
Wireless broadband delivers internet to your property via radio signals:
•WombatWireless™ X: Connects your home directly to one of WombatNET’s private transmitter sites.
•WombatWireless™ 4G+: Connects using One NZ’s mobile towers, like a phone accessing mobile data.
Both systems eliminate the need for fixed lines and are ideal for rural or semi-urban locations.
How fast is WombatWireless™ 4G+?
Typical speeds range from 20Mb/s to 100Mb/s, depending on tower distance and signal quality.
Our Unlimited-Max plan allows speeds of up to 300Mb/s for those located in urban areas or close to a tower.
With a properly installed antenna, many customers experience speeds comparable to urban fibre.
Can I use my own router?
For optimal performance, we recommend using the pre-configured WombatNET 4G+ router. However, advanced users may bring their own device if it is compatible with One NZ’s 4G bands and supports external antennas.
An additional one-off $25 charge will be applied to supply an unlocked SIM card.
Is there a contract?
WombatWireless™ 4G+ is offered without a contract if you purchase a router/modem upfront. If renting a router ($15/m), a standard 24-month term applies.
You may switch between plans anytime without penalty. If we are unable to resolve a service-impacting issue in a reasonable timeframe, we will release you from your contract—your satisfaction comes first.
How soon can I get connected?
Most connections are completed within 7 days of first contact, depending on:
•Signal availability at your location
•Weather conditions (for managed installs)
•Equipment or technician availability
We will let you know if any of these factors might affect you.
What is included in the monthly price?
•Unlimited data (fair use applies)
•4G+ speeds
•Technical support
•Optional managed install or plug-and-play setup
•Ongoing connection monitoring and diagnostics
